Like many of you, I was taught to go to school, get a good job and save money for the future. Not a bad thing to teach children, and a very good place to start your working life.

However, later in life we wonder why we're working so hard at someone else's business, making them rich.

I have a Master's degree in chemical engineering, had a high-income job, but knew something was missing. No matter how hard I worked, I got the same check. And who likes being told what to do, being told to travel whenever and wherever?

Previous generations could count on job security if employed with a large company. People who wanted to start their own business traded that security for their own freedom. Now however, with the "new economy" there is no job security, leading many people to work harder than ever and living in daily fear of being laid off.

What could I do to protect my future?My answer involved: developing new skills that could be used in other jobs, developing other sources of income, and getting paid according to my level of effort.

This is why I left my high-salary "secure" job for a career in real estate and started to invest in real estate. I was working in the San Francisco Bay Area and saw the outrageous house prices, which were increasing at a frantic pace despite layoffs and more layoffs.

I could have stayed there and bought a small place and paid a huge mortgage every month and worried about layoffs, but I was looking for freedom, remember…My research for the right place to live, work and invest in led me to the Fresno area, where the right conditions existed for making money both investing in my own properties and in helping others to buy or sell.

Thanks to the sizzling Fresno real estate market, my return on investment has been over 100% on each property. And believe me, there's nothing like having tenants pay your bills for you!!

Why am I telling you this? I believe that financial and personal freedom can be yours, if you believe in yourself, plan carefully, and then ACT.

My personal motto is "Dream Big, Plan Diligently, Act On It!"
